The national unemployment rate is approximately 4.8%, yet the
unemployment rate for persons with a mental health diagnosis is
an astounding 65-75%, the highest of any other population in the U.S.
Yet a whopping 90% majority of persons with a mental health diagnosis
who are unemployed would love to have a job.
Many obstacles can hinder the competitive employment of persons with
a mental health diagnosis. AIM’s Employment Resource Center works
to expand employment opportunities for mental health consumers through
consumer-directed services such as job search assistance, job
site support, and career planning.
It is estimated that approximately 26% of the general population has a
mental health diagnosis. This may sound like a surprising statistic, but
since a mental health diagnosis is not necessarily visible, such as a
physical disability, it can be harder to recognize and understand its nature.
The complexity of mental health in addition to the media’s portrayal of it
can lead many mental health consumers through a labyrinth of issues before
they can find their dream job. One of our main goals at Employment
Resource Center is to improve local employers’ understanding and
acceptance of persons with a mental health diagnosis, which will lead
to more employment opportunities for mental health consumers.
If we, the citizens and employers of East Tennessee, can let our
similarities override our differences, we can stimulate the economy
and increase the self-sufficiency of mental health consumers.
If you are proud to live in East Tennessee now, just wait until together
we lower our unemployment rate and create a sense of community
for all of our citizens.
